As part of the rebuilding effort after the Maui fire, these modular homes, are proof that a more dignified solution to disaster housing exist.
Maui, Hawai’i – Liv-Connected has provided 109 units on a site prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the families affected by the a fire that destroyed the town of Lahaina in August 2023. Dynamic Group, a Baton Rouge based firm that specializes in delivering large, complex Federal projects, was the prime contractor and Fading West and Guerdon were the manufacturers of these homes.
Liv-Connected is part of a team of experts responsible for designing, manufacturing, transporting, and installing the Alternative Transportable Temporary Housing Units (ATTHUs) on the FEMA site. In addition to Liv-Connected, Dynamic, Fading West & Guerdon, the Maui team included Alpha Construction as the local general contractor, Marex Services for transportation logistics, and ProSet Modular as the set crew craning and installing the homes.
FEMA commissioned 169 units for the first site, with an option for up to 400 total ATTHUs on subsequent sites. “We created Liv-Connected to provide well-designed housing solutions for families affected by disasters that could also be manufactured quickly and efficiently,” said Jordan Rogove founding partner of DXA Studio and Liv-Connected. “We have configured them thoughtfully so they could be permanent homes for anyone, and the families affected by the Lahaina wildfires deserve to have access to the best resources to help them recover.”
Every aspect of a Liv-Connected home is designed with wellness in mind. The materials are low-to-no emission wherever possible and were selected to maintain a safe and healthy air quality. Biophilic design is the driver behind the high ceilings, warm finishes, and large, operable windows. The interior space is created to be uplifting, which, when paired with warm natural light and airflow, is a key factor in a healthy home. The core and finishes of the home are made of wood and the windows frame views of the exterior, allowing for a connection between life inside and community outside.
The Liv-Connected homes that will be on the FEMA site honor the vernacular of traditional houses in Hawaii, and feature colors from Front Street, the commercial center of Lahaina that was lost to the fire. The construction mirrors local ways of building and the science behind the homes ensure that the structures can withstand the tropical climate.
